THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES
Bluenose by Emil Sher
Directed by Sonya Meyer
TRTC seeks a diverse cast of four adults (ages 16+) of varying ages, genders, ethnicities and physical types for a Spring 2019 production of "Bluenose."
ABOUT THE PLAY
From the Seattle Children's Theatre website, "Bluenose is a rollicking pirate story with quick and witty banter, fantastic physical comedy, and a lovely story of tolerance and acceptance. Three red-nosed pirates stumble across a blue-nosed character fishing in the water around their boat. Being different from them is an unthinkable offense, and they don’t like it! Despite their bumbling, stumbling ways, she teaches them to let go of their prejudices and fears, and they all learn a little bit about themselves along the way." The playwright describes the piece as "A play for Younger Audiences, Older Audiences, and Unrepentant Pirates."
Ratt, Spatt and Knat: Three mean-spirited, red-nosed pirates who guide their cluttered ship wherever the scent of riches leads them. They pillage and plunder with abandon, fuelled by an insatiable appetite to acquire whatever they fancy, wherever they find it. Imperialists at heart but inept to the core, each has “his” own signature (the roles can be played by women): Ratt is the self-proclaimed captain of the crew and has a take-charge attitude; Spatt is like a cabin-boy who forever aspires to a higher position but doesn’t have the brains to get there; Knat is the most thoughtful of the trio.
Ku: Ku's petite stature masks a stone-hard drive to remain true to her (or his) sense of self, and people. Ridiculed by the pirates because of her blue nose, she does not wilt in the face of a barrage of insults or the relentless drive to question her abilities. She is not perfect, and thus has her own prejudices and preconceptions. But a combination of confidence coupled with a willingness to listen stands her in good stead.
